Mala Kunia was the first album featuring Ulrich. Two compositions were co-composed by the new band member, together with Edgar Froese.

Edgar Froese, founder of Tangerine Dream, died in Vienna on the 20th of January, 2015 from a pulmonary embolism. On the 6th of April, 2015, the remaining members Thorsten Quaeschning, Ulrich Schnauss and Hoshiko Yamane together with Bianca Froese-Acquaye, Edgar’s wife and the manager of TD, agreed to continue working together to fulfill Edgar's vision for Tangerine Dream. As well as the concepts and ideas Edgar had outlined, he left a large number of musical sketches which he had already prepared during the initial phase of the band’s reformation process.
Tangerine Dream played their first show following Edgar's death on the 9th of June, 2016 in Szczecin, Poland.
Four TD tracks are featured in the Netflix series Stranger Things, including Exit, Rare Bird, Green Desert and Horizon. The composers of the original music for the TV show, Kyle Dixon and Michael Stein from the band SURVIVE, have referenced the Tangerine Dream scores for Sorcerer and The Keep as major influences. As an homage to this tribute, TD covered the Stranger Things Theme and uploaded it onto their SoundCloud page.
On the 29th of September, 2017, the band released their new studio album Quantum Gate, coinciding with the 50th anniversary of the founding of Tangerine Dream.
In 2018, the band, consisting of Thorsten Quaeschning, Ulrich Schnauss and Hoshiko Yamane, played live performances throughout Europe. Highlights from these concerts were the sold out Elbphilharmonie in Hamburg, two nights at the Union Chapel in London, performing with Richard Barbieri, and opening up the Dekmantel Festival Amsterdam alongside Four Tet.
